Here we are. It’s like a dream ! A kindly padre met me & 4 others on our train, all secondary school chaps, one just like Colin Dorman, all pleasant & – well – gentlemen as they say.
Then we bussed to the Barracks. A beautiful streamlined place on the cliffs. A long drive vivid with flowers. At the Guard Room the first question was – Religion. Then what games ? Cricket, tennis, etc. . .” We all play cricket in our 5 except one named Cohen, religion, R.C. !! Then they gave us beds, a mug, fork, spoon & knife & we had tea. Nice tea, sweet, a nice, sausages (3 each) Jam & cake !! Now we get our numbers & addresses, & we can go out till 5 to 11. We get up at 6.30 & finish at 4.30. The rest free. We’re here for five months, on a course. Then we’re posted. I am the only OTC one in our 5. 28 altogether. 10 beds in our room. Mines the corner one. I’m the oldest, 2 @ 30, 1 @ 32, 1 @ 27.
The other blokes are very pleasant, all “well turned out”, all helpful, all full of pride of these Barracks.
No more news, I’m going out to see the sea with the Dorman man, from Kidderminster.
Bless you & keep your pecker up –
