27 October 1941

19411027a                              This morning these came, six of them, from our uncle Jonathan! I’ve done nothing but send your copy off. I didn’t dither over the inscription, I just popped it down, for better or for worse. Not very good really, but what does it matter, all the book is yours !

I’ll deal with the others later, when I have collected my scattered thoughts. Jonathan’s done us proud, don’t you think ? The boards are flimsy but the papers jolly good & although the type is smaller than usual it’s O.K.

Anyhow, here it is, & bless you & whatever there is of good in it, I thank you: for you are the main inspiration of it all.

As I remember it my full list is as follows:-
(1) You.
(2) Me.
(3) Mother.
(4) Your Mother
(5) J. G. Lawrence. (who married us)
(6) Auntie Edie
(7) Mary Hanson
(8) Eleanor Bailey
(9) J. J. Hancox
(10) Eileen
(11) Fred Thirlby.
(12) Mrs Green
Can we reduce this ? It means we buy 6, @ 7/- = 42/-. us !!! Or is it all necessary. Perhaps it is all necessary. Have I forgotten anyone important ?

And now for the cards. Who to. Shall I send them, you’re so busy with Christmas cards. Oh, all this later. For now, here is your copy, beloved, & I hope to offer you many better ones. But the writing of this has been a joy, hasn’t it ! D’you remember the late sessions, & the puzzling walks, & the exhilarating incidents of these dear people all to surprise us. I do hope other people like it, as we do. I wonder.

I’ll write tonight for the last post. This is just to get to you as soon as possible.

I do love you so, & I’m so proud that I can send you this token.

I must stop, to get this off at all. But I hate stopping.
Tommy’s B.O.S. this week & he’s brought in a HUGE parcel from you & a letter. But I’m not opening either. I’ll get this off. I want it to be in the post speeding towards you. Then tonight, after the Royal Hotel concert, I’ll write more soberly, & discuss your letter & the parcel.
