26 August 1941-2

19410826-2f                         The orderly posted (I hope) a letter to you after dinner, & just now nice postie came all the way here with two lovely letters from you which I must answer at once. One was written on Saturday night & Sunday after dinner, the other on Sunday night & Monday morning.

Dear letters. So sorry about the triangles, I got them inverted
19410826g                 Now I see. I laughed & laughed & laughed at your hens till the tears ran down my cheeks. All alone I laughed in the silent Ward, for everyone except me sleeps. I feel so well.

I loved J.J.H. On Daphne, what a wise man, and how dear of him to be so open & intimate with you. And the 19410826l ! Yes, we had W.C. on the ward, he did push the plate back & speak well !

                        [I say, SICKNESS ! Really ?]

                        Peter’s a nice name, says Simon. But there’s a Jeavons & a Harrison. Pity. Brian’s all right.

All right, I won’t build castles. I’ll wait. But, be careful of coals & beds & things.

An officer has just been in & asked for Gunner Daniell. Wants me to get up a show here. I’m cautious. Not amateur work if I can help it. I’d rather write novels. But I had to agree, provisionally. But maybe I’ll wriggle. Go intellectual & scorn variety ! One will see

I shall miss Eva when I go to Scarborough Hospital tomorrow, if I go. They do want to know why my chart does such things.

Did you get the bed ?

                        Klaus getting 5d an hour. 10 a day = 50d = 4/2. Five days = £1-0-10, + 4 on Sat = 1/8 = £1-2-6 a week, Twice what I get. Will Norman take me on ?

I’m very much the oldest inhabitant here. We’ve a full ward again. A Scottie has just come in, in a kilt. I’ll watch him take it off & answer the old question- does he wear anything underneath. He’s got a lovely furry thing on the left side & a bristly moustache:
19410826j Salmon coloured stockings & a tunic . Very odd. It’ll be fun watching him undress. He sitting down, waiting for Nurse to come. What a thrill for her. But she likes me best, I’ve got an extra pillow & clean counterpane.

P.S.
Oh, the BBC Chicken Book ! No I don’t know. The desk drawer perhaps, with the gardening books ? It was on the window ledge. Oh, empty & sort my desk tray some time. 99/100 of my papers & desk contents can be scrapped. But Ann’s book ! Try odd drawers. It’s a Young Farmers Club book paper covered one, with a picture of kids looking at a hen on the front I think. I’m afraid a Good Hunt is all I can suggest. Write to Ann as you said. D. would be distressed !!! I hope you find it. Did you find the bugle call menu ?
19410826-2gI do love you. And if THIS SHOULD HAPPEN I’ll wear feathers for pride, of you, of me, of us & of IT. But if it doesn’t happen I’ll still be, for always, fonder than any fool.
