19410812d                             Another perforation this afternoon, – vaccination.  The effect not due for ten days though & as I’ve had 3 already (the only one in the squad) I shall probably escape.  While at the M O’s I had a party with the orderly & had a dose of his special laxative & a dose of his very special laxative.

(Don’t look round but I believe were being dive bombed !) (No, its a 4 engined Sterling doing antics) (were getting hot at aircraft identification.  We’ve had 4 lectures now & have four more.  The lectures we have.  Good job the union knows nowt on’t.

Its 18.40 hrs.  We’ve just stopped for the day, with a buzzer reading lecture.  I’ve twenty minutes of pleasure writing to you & then supper 7 – 7.10 & then Rhoda’s script until the light fails.  There’s no electric up here in the Ed. Office.  But it’s being put in. What a day.  Parade & Marching drill 8.30 – 9.30, Aircraft lecture till 10.15, Bren gun until 11, Break 11 – 11.10, P.T. (on the cliffs) 11.10 – 11.45, Arms Drill 11.45 – 12.30.  Parade 1.20 Arms Drill till 2.20. P.T. (Boxing – more anon) till 3.30.  Vaccination, Drill 4o/c to 5o/c.  Tea & Parade for Buzzer lecture 5.30 & clear @ 6.30: now this happy break & work till bed time, with my rifle & kit to clean & the Morse to revise !  Quelle vie.  But one revels in it & bears up well, with a sparkle.

Oh, I boxed a bloke of my weight (the Bacteriologist to be (in Embryo) & we had a happy 3 minutes.  We decided to spar, but we soon began hitting each other & hit back and then, like all the scraps, we had a good set to. Very pleasant.  At the end all had boxed but Bishop.  Everyone wanted to scrap him & he chose, – me !  Bless him, I’m his chiefest teaser, but I expect he trusts me.  So we had a gorgeous pantomimic 3 minutes.  He wouldn’t hit, & I just tickled him.  It was a real Colin Claude act.  Wait till you see the photo, I’ll send it this week end, I’ve ordered one big one & one card.  He is superb.  We’ve another dopey, named Swan, he’s been here for 6 months & he’s always put back, he’s dopey without being funny.  Just dumb.  But Bishop is an original.

Oh, a letter from uncle Jack this evening !  Bless him.  Its so precious.  I’ll send it to you when I’ve answered it, no time this evening.  Also a packet of cigarettes & a letter from Mother, she is very gay.  I’ll enclose it if it’s handy.  Did I say I’d a letter from Bower ?  I’ll send that later.  I’ve so many to write when I get this script done.  It goes well.  I’ve got to the battle & thats much the same.

Oh, the Spectator came, thanks very much.  Your 2nd letter yesterday, from Fenny Compton, was my todays letter really, so I re-read it at dinner time.  Last night in bed I reread nearly all your letters.  Precious documents.  Your gaiety is quite special & is yours & yours alone.

Oh, send an old toothbrush sometime, will you please, an old one, not for its teeth, for its tiddly parts.

Another great convoy passed this morning, stretching away N & S as far as we could see, & Hurricanes busy overhead growling, hackles up.  The training’s speeding up so much & the draughts in are so big that I expect we’ll have to go to the Continent this Autumn.  Seems a wise policy.  Yo ho if we do !

How does the garden grow, & how is the car & Candy.  Tell me about little things as you do, walks, callers, & committee’s.  I’m so glad the Red X have co-opted you.  Your one of the most sensible people in the village, you & U.J. & J.Spencer & Mathilda & Eleanor & Jim Jeffs & the Nightingales.  Has Arthur Keen joined the army yet ?  How’s the Tommy Box.  Do Gunners qualify.  And tell the Red X committee to buck up & pass the Hundred pounds by October 31st.  Who’s doing the men’s club in my place ?

My love to Mrs. Edwards- this week.  & the Jeavons.  What of Peter ?
19410812eYo Ho September !! YO HO !
